CHAPTER 28
November 2-5, 1880
Center Creek, Utah Territory
It was mutually agreed, during the walk home from Kara’s meeting with President Willard, that Richard Connell would accept the call to practice the principle of plural marriage. There was no talk of who the additional wife might be. Neither wanted to think about it. Richard, however, stopped every few steps, wrapped his arms around his wife in an exaggerated bear hug, and repeated the same words: “Really? A new baby?” It was calming and mind-diverting for both of them.
Margaret and Sarah exhibited only mild curiosity over the nature of the meeting. Ammon was still awake and in a playful mood. Both Richard and Kara did everything they could to direct all attention to their young son and away from everything else. Ammon cooperated.
Richard left early the next morning, before Kara or Ammon were awake. He took biscuits and dried beef to eat. The night before, he had warned Kara that he would probably be gone all day. He was. It was well after dark and he was obviously exhausted as he sat down to the evening meal that Kara had prepared. She was tired too, and neither wanted to talk about who they might recommend adding to their household.
Richard, however, voiced a strong opinion the next morning when Kara asked if he had a recommendation for President Willard. “I don’t want to go around sizing up women as potential future wives. I don’t even want to think about it; it’s hurtful to you, and it just seems wrong to me. This isn’t what happily married men do.”
Kara smiled, happy that he felt the way he did. She couldn’t resist, however, attempting to brighten the mood. “It would probably be better for you if you make the choice. If I choose, you will probably end up with a 78-year-old widow interested only in making meals and cleaning house.”
Her attempt failed however. “I won’t be making any recommendations. I’ve selected the wife I want. If I get another wife, someone other than me will be making the choice.”
“If you don’t choose, who does?” Kara asked. “If I understand what President Willard said, he’ll be the one.”
“That’s what I understand. But it really doesn’t matter. We’ve agreed to accept the practice of the principle. Who joins us is ultimately up to him. He may not even approve who we choose.” And then, recognizing Kara’s attempt to break what was a depressing atmosphere, he added “of course, the other woman has a say in this too, and it’s not likely anyone else will have me.” But even those words hurt.
Kara, a little reluctantly but understanding Richard’s feelings, did not press him further. Both simply went about their daily duties in a methodical manner the rest of that day and until time for their meeting with the stake president the next day. Neither wanted to speculate in any way. Both purposely attempted to remove any thought of any potential candidate from their minds.
It was just after sundown when Sarah arrived to sit with Ammon so Kara and Richard could meet again with the stake president.
